After her daughter Ruby's transition Jamie Lee Curtis says she has learned a lot about gender. Now Curtis is opening up about that journey and sharing why her daughter wants to get her story out now, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

In a mother-daughter interivew with THR, Curtis called herself a "grateful student" after learning to speak the right language for her Ruby.

"It's learning new terminology and words," Curtis said. "I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I'm going to blow it, I'm going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes."

One thing that has taken some getting use to is not calling her daughter by her dead name.

"That was, of course, the hardest thing. Just the regularity of the word. The name that you'd given a child. That you've been saying their whole life," Curtis explained. "And so, of course, at first that was the challenge. Then the pronoun. My husband and I still slip occasionally."

Curtis first opened up about her daughter's transition in July. But it has been Ruby's decision to step into the spotlight and share more of her story.

About gender, Ruby said she has been thinking about it since she was a teenager and told her fiance around seven years ago that she was "probably trans" but wanted to wait on telling family. Later Ruby told family via text.

"It was scary – just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn't know," Ruby recalled. "It was intimidating – but I wasn't worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life."

Coming forward with her story now is about helping others find acceptances said Ruby.

"Me coming out has nothing to do with my mom being famous," she explained. "I've tried to stay out of the spotlight for many years or at least done my best to. I'm happy to be more visible if it helps others."
